Native to the Mediterranean region, the Peppermint plant is also cultivated in the USA, Italy, Great Britain, and Japan. Peppermint is speculated to be a natural hybrid of Water Mint (M. aquatica) and Spearmint (M. spicata). Greek mythology describes the origin of this menthol rich plant from the story of the nymph Minthe. Minthe was the lover of Pluto; the God of the Greek underworld. When Pluto's wife heard of their affair, she murdered Minthe in a fit of rage and envy. Saddened by the event, Pluto brought Minthe back to life as a fragrant flower who would release a powerful, lingering aroma every time she was stepped on. Ancient texts suggest this plant's role in culinary and medicinal use to around 1500 BC. It has been referred to in Chinese and Japanese folk medicine. Dried Peppermint leaves have been discovered in Ancient Egyptian tombs too. The Roman naturalist Pliny the Elder's literature states that the Greeks and Romans used the plant to ornament themselves and their tables at feasts while their cooks used it to flavours wines and sauces. Aristotle referred to Peppermint as an effective aphrodisiac in his writings. Alexander the Great forbade his soldiers from consuming Peppermint as it was thought to arouse erotic thoughts and distract the soldiers from the will to fight. The Arabs used Peppermint in their social drinks as a virility stimulant and the Romans used the plant's leaves on their floors to get rid of insects and pests.
